You Have My Heart
What is the secret which poets all learn,
that keeps me awake while the late hours turn?
It starts with a feeling that changes into thoughts,
a story half-written, sometimes born from retort.
Poetry grows where chaos doth play,
in jokes that fall flat, in things we don’t say.
It borrows its tempo from waves on the shore,
from knocks at the door and from wanting much more.
I played with these words when silence was loud,
when rooms felt empty or when I felt less proud.
I gave poetry time, I gave it my ear,
and it gave me a way to stay honest and clear.
A line fits in well, a word finds a mate,
sounds join their hands to unravel my fate.
Inside of the verse the echoes run tight,
while end words stand firm, holding meaning upright.
This craft knows the weight of a long working day,
of hands that are rough, of dreams that won’t wait.
It knows how a smile can steady unrest,
how a shared cup of tea can quiet a tempest.
I learned to love it the way people do,
not all at once, but slowly and true.
From doubts to drafts, from ink to art,
poetry blossomed and reshaped my heart.
Poems touch the heart because hearts hear true,
they hear what is lived, not just what sounds new.
Each rhyme is a vow two syllables keep,
a vow made in daylight, remembered in sleep.
So hear these lines well, in full and in part,
to know why words matter and why this is an art.
If poetry speaks, let this be my part,
that poetry is life, and it still has my heart.
