A Mother's Day Prayer

About this piece
This year on Mother's Day I thought it appropriate to write a prayer. I am sure all mothers and daughters will be able to relate to it. Celebrating love at hand and passing it on.........
When she tries to lend a hand
But is slower than I would prefer
As I try to ward her off
Help me be kinder, please
When she speaks of old days
I am not interested in recalling
My face turns red in annoyance
Help me be gentler, please
When she tries to pick a conversation
I am scrolling on my phone
Pretending I am not listening
Help me be more attentive, please
When she stays away from converses
Not to seem too nosey
I feel she may not understand
Help me be more inclusive, please
When she speaks what is right
I feign not being ignorant
Not willing to give her the credit
Help me be more appreciative, please
When her prayer fills my home
Though I know it’s for me also
It is easy to brush it aside
Help me be more thankful, please
When I pick on her sometimes
She listens in silence
Knowing well my frustrations
Help me be milder, please
Yet every night as I drift off
I am content she is safe and at hand
Little snags forgotten and forgiven
Help it be that way always, please
Kind, gentle, attentive
Inclusive, appreciative, thankful
Mild and forgiving, my little ones be
In my greying days too, please
