The poem portrays the simple, nature-blended life of a rural Bangladeshi girl, her childhood playfulness, and at the same time, her deep patriotism and dreams. The poem also for portrays many natural elements of Bangladesh.
English translation
I am talking about a girl—
Who grew up in the sunbeams of a small village in Bangladesh,
Where birds arrive to liven up the gatherings,
She roams around smiling inside fields of ripe paddy.
She wears a handloom sari, her hair tied in two braids,
Anklets chime on her two feet, and a mustard flower is tucked in her ear.
Waking up very early in the morning, she lights the clay stove,
With a pitcher on her hip, she goes to the Padma River to fetch water.
Right beside the house is the Padma River, rich with Hilsa fish,
In that very river, a gang of restless boys bathe together,
She counts waves in the river water in her mind,
that girl swims out from time to time, plucking and bringing back red water lilies,
With vines wrapping around her feet, she sways along with the waves.
In the afternoon she goes out strolling to steal mangoes,
To keep her inside the house,
everyone breaks into a heavy sweat.
She listens to no prohibitions, nor does she sit quietly,
Gathering with the village girls, she plays in a group.
Swaying the branches of trees, she plucks flowers just to her heart's desire,
Stumbling upon the brick-baked clay, flowers fall beside her head.
Yet again, shaking the dust off her body, she dances around in a carefree mood, carefree!Even so, what of it? She already has the experience as they are marrying her off at this age,
I am talking about those things—doll weddings, flower marriages—I know you are surprised,
A marriage of flowers! What kind of wedding is this?I know you do not understand,
some flower is imagined as the bride,Some flower as the groom,
inviting many people, feeding them sweets again.
Yesterday a wedding was held with special arrangements,
Cooking pulao made of leaves, and meat with shells.
Dolls were the wedding guests, there were many flowers,
The bride was a water lily
and the groom was a Spanish cherry (Bokul).
When the moon rises overhead and solitude descends,
Returning home, she embarks on sewing a colorful Nakshi Kantha.
With colorful threads, she weaves hundreds of spoken words,
Hidden within the bosom of the quilt lie joys and deep sorrows.
She has a poor father and her mother has passed away.
Yet all these hardships have not been able to touch her,
She thinks to herself, one day she will grow up to be someone great.
Studying hard, she will become a grand doctor,
Then the wants and poverty of their lives will vanish.
Our February Twenty-First is drenched in blood, blessed is the Shaheed Minar,
Her maternal grandfather gave his life for the Bengali language.
The red sun over the green field flutters and flies today,
The girl's paternal grandfather gave his life for independence.
She feels proud to be born in this country of six seasons,
Thinking of the Liberation War and the Language Movement fills her heart with emotional tears.
