About this piece
A poetic reflection from Samoa on the ocean, culture, and identity as living threads that link people through generations. Inspired by fa’aSamoa and traditional proverbs, this piece examines belonging, service, and connection within the Commonwealth.
The ocean does not divide us. It remembers us.
I come from islands where the ocean is not a boundary but a space that connects us. It is a living thread that carries our stories across the Pacific. Its waves move between shores, reminding us that we are never fully apart.
In my culture, nothing is ever truly lost. It is woven. Through ie toga, through tatau, and through the voices of our elders, each generation adds its own thread to who we are.
We follow “O le ala i le pule o le tautua," which means the pathway to leadership is through service. It reminds me that what we do should uplift others, not just ourselves.
Another truth I grew up with is "E le soifua le tagata i le fala e tasi." No one lives on one mat alone. We are supported by family, village, and culture; by people seen and unseen who stand with us.
In the same way, "O lou aiga o lou faasinomaga" means my family is my identity. Where I come from is not separate from who I am. It is the foundation of everything I do.
The ocean reflects all of this without speaking. It connects islands, people, and generations. It is the thread that never breaks.
The thread I bring to the Commonwealth is connection between ocean and land, past and future, and people across distance.
I am only one thread, but I come from a people who have always been weaving and will continue long after me. When one thread from Samoa moves, it does not move alone. It carries the weight of the ocean and the memory of those who came before.
