Thread of Return

About this piece
A reflective prose piece exploring education, identity, and shared human experience. It traces a “thread” of learning, struggle, and purpose across lives and places, showing how individual journeys are woven into a wider Commonwealth of becoming and connection.
My thread began in a classroom in Nigeria, where chalk dust floated like unfinished dreams: soft, uncertain, refusing to settle on wooden desks and faded walls.
It wound through pages I did not own, yet learned to read with borrowed light. It moved through classrooms where I taught biology and language, through lesson plans written late into the night, and students searching for meaning in knowledge that often felt distant.
It travelled further into research, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, into reports, policy briefs, and conference rooms where lived experience had to be translated into evidence. Into moments as a rapporteur, holding many voices and trying not to lose their truth.
It was never straight.
It bent through expectation. It tightened in struggle. It loosened in the quiet mercy of progress; when a student understood, when dialogue shifted, when data began to speak clearly.
Still, it held.
I began to see the same thread in other lives of young people navigating education, migration, climate realities, and the slow work of building futures across Nigeria and beyond. Threads like mine: fraying, yet alive.
And I understood: no thread is ever truly individual.
They cross silently between classrooms and communities, between local struggles and global conversations on development, governance, and youth futures.
So, I followed mine.
Into teaching, where knowledge becomes exchange.
Into research, where silence becomes evidence.
Into writing, where memory and data meet.
And slowly, I learned the thread was never asking to end in achievement.
It was asking to return; not as completion, but as responsibility.
So, I return to those still holding their threads in uncertain hands, turning learning into survival, and survival into meaning.
Not a single line, but part of a larger weaving.
A thread among many threads.
A Commonwealth of becoming.
