Written piece
The Warning
ARNOLD WARD
Barbados
About this piece
Even the most beautiful quilt or carpet might show some soiled spots, some frayed or broken threads. This poem laments the tragedy of lost youth; of lives destroyed before they are properly begun. The sad price of illegal drugs, alcohol and other vices.
The Warning
No sun for him ..
No crashing, gurgling waves awake
numb feet that stomp the passive sand
Sweat pours like tears from
his perfect body ..
He passes by me
I try to find his eyes
He is no longer with us
He is gone ..
Driving and driven … up and down the beach
Right arm crooked, steering some absent car.
Is there a man somewhere
defiling .. destroying..
with yellow metal on his chest
and rings on every finger?
Is this bling
worth more than this boy’s mind?
Worth more than your soul?
The warning turns
He drives my way again
How stands your body when your head is gone?
I see a brother
This duppy is a son
Oh God!
