The Thread We Carry Eternally

About this piece
A reflection from Saint Kitts and Nevis, on “thread” woven and carried through generations through memory, stories, and everyday life, connecting past, present and future.
My thread is not just something I learned to sew. It is something passed down, something I carry.
It is woven into the fabric of my life like a quiet work of hands that came before me. The weave of tender hands that prepared, built, and held families together without naming it a craft. It moves like the wind, flowing in stories told in passing, through lessons given in our everyday moments, through traditions that we never announced but always understood.
In St. Kitts and Nevis, thread is not only found in fabric. It is found in memory, in voice, in rhythm, in the way life is repeated and passed on. It is in the small, ordinary things that become part of who we truly are.
I have come to understand that thread is not always visible. Sometimes, it is the connection between generations, the link between what was and what will be. It is the quiet strength that holds things together, even when change begins to pull them apart.
My thread reminds me where I come from. Though somewhat tethered with time, it proudly carries identity, belonging, and the weight of stories that continue through me, eternally.
It is not perfect. It is not always straight. But its stitches somehow align.
It is strong…
And it continues.
