The Thread I Couldn’t See

About this piece
A poetic reflection on survival, faith, grief, sickness, trauma, and love, rooted in a Namibian landscape. It explores an unseen thread that holds us together through pain, doubt, and healing, even when life feels like it is coming undone.
There were days the world felt too heavy for my hands.
Like I was coming apart in places no one could name.
A loose thread at the edge of everything, hanging like dry grass before the rain.
Waiting for the smallest pull to undo me completely.
I have walked through dust and silence that felt endless.
Where grief sits like a heavy sky over Windhoek streets and sickness lingers in homes where prayers are whispered low.
So soft even the walls must learn to listen.
I searched for something certain.
Something I could hold.
But faith did not come to me in noise.
It did not split the sky over the Khomas hills or write answers in lightning across the desert night.
It came quietly like wind moving through dry velds.
Like footsteps in the Kalahari sand that disappear but somehow still mean someone was there.
It lived in the unseen.
In the breath that returned to me when I thought it wouldn’t.
In the hands that stayed when love would have been easier to leave.
In the stubborn miracle of waking up again after nights that felt like swallowing silence whole.
There were days I questioned this invisible thread.
They said would hold me.
I doubted.
I pulled away.
I let fear speak louder than the prayers my grandmother taught me.
Soft Rukwangali words folded into morning air.
And still something held.
Not tightly.
Not loudly.
Not always in ways I understood.
But enough to keep me from falling beyond return.
Maybe faith is not certainty.
Maybe it is not answers written in stone or scripture alone.
Maybe it is also
A thread moving through trauma and tenderness.
Through hospital rooms and empty chairs.
Through grief that learns your name and still does not own you.
A thread woven through scars.
Through survival and through love.
That stays even when it hurts to stay.
A thread that does not ask you to be whole.
Only to keep breathing when everything in you feels broken.
Even now, standing between doubt and belief.
I feel it soft, steady, and unbreaking.
Holding me together in ways I am still learning to call love.
learning to call God,
learning to call home.
