About this piece
My submission includes two spoken word poems: "When You Know" and "Dear Gen Z Mothers".
"When You Know" is a call for hard work and focus. It uses Cameroonian figures to show that discipline, hardwork , humility bring success and " dear genz mothers" calls for
good parenting
“When You Know”
When you know like Charles Ebune,
who changes the world through spoken words,
when you know like Samuel Eto'o, whom the net fears,
when you know like Francis Ngannou,
fortune runs behind you,
with a touch of grace and discipline.
What exactly do you know?
Will complaints change your situation?
Will complaining fill your stomach?
You don’t have to absorb all knowledge in the world,
but you must master one thing well.
Didn’t God say He will bless the work of our hands?
Oh, when you know,
fortune follows you.
But never be like Nebuchadnezzar,
because pride shines, then fades.
"Dear Gen Z Mothers"
Oh sweet olden days when children were their mothers’ priorities.
They cooked, they cleaned,
they helped with homework though they never went to school.
What is happening now?
Before the child cries, mouths are shut with pacifiers;
they are given tablets to watch CoComelon
while their mothers shout “clock it!” on TikTok and Facebook.
No longer healthy vegetables and fruits,
but sweets, cakes, and chocolate.
Oh, the Gen Z you are,
ignorantly hurting your children.
Oh mothers, wake up.
