Kilimanjaro Still Remembers

About this piece
A reflection from Tanzania on Kilimanjaro, melting ice, and our shared climate future. This piece offers one thread to the Commonwealth Quilt, weaving stewardship, responsibility, and the hope that humanity can align power with wisdom for generations ahead.
KILIMANJARO STILL REMEMBERS
They say the snows are vanishing.
As if mountains forget quietly.
But Kilimanjaro remembers.
It remembers when the ice stood broader,
when the air carried a colder promise,
when permanence seemed less negotiable.
Now the glaciers retreat,
not in anger,
but in arithmetic.
Carbon has no borders.
Heat has no passport.
The atmosphere counts everything.
From Tanzania, I offer this thread
to the Commonwealth Quilt,
stitched from mountain light,
retreating ice,
and the stubborn hope
that humanity may yet mature.
We inherited a planet shaped over billions of years.
We became powerful enough
to alter it within two centuries.
That is our triumph.
That is our burden.
Climate change is not merely
an environmental question.
It is a civilizational one.
It asks whether wisdom
can rise as quickly as power.
The waters that leave these mountains
flow into farms,
into cities,
into lives unseen by those
who profit from distant combustion.
Yet the atmosphere binds us
more tightly than any border ever could.
Fifty-six nations.
Billions of people.
One sky.
A quilt is made
not from sameness,
but from joining.
Each fragment retains its color.
Each thread strengthens the whole.
So I bring this piece from Tanzania,
from beneath the changing snows,
from a continent rising,
from a century deciding.
And I bring, too, a book:
The Climate of Civilization: History, Power, and the Universal Law of Earth's Survival,
offered freely in service of knowledge,
responsibility,
and our common future.

The mountain still stands.
May we prove equally worthy.
