Human rights advocates from across the Commonwealth will be coming together in Bengaluru exploring strategies to advance rights of persons with disabilities in India and in their own countries.
According to The World Health Organisation’s 2011 World Report on Disability, 15 percent of the world’s population live with some form of disability. In India alone, it is estimated that there are up to 80 million people with disabilities. While the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act was passed in 2016, there is more to do in order to ensure its impact is felt.
The Commonwealth Foundation has supported seven projects across six countries that focus on advancing the rights and needs of persons with disabilities. At this event, representatives from the implementing organisations will work together to understand what each can learn from the other. They will also hear from leading experts who have worked for disability rights across India.
Press can observe sessions and conduct interviews with leading experts and participants throughout the exchange. To arrange please contact Gillian Cooper at g.cooper@commonwealth.int as soon as possible.
