Issue
Zanzibar faces severe climate change impacts, including extreme weather and disruptions to agriculture. Women, young people, and marginalised communities are disproportionately affected, and often lack the resources and platforms needed advocate for equitable climate policies.

How we are helping
This project aims to empower civil society to advocate for climate justice. It will strengthen local capacity to advocate for the adaptation strategies required to safeguard the rights and interests of vulnerable groups.
About the project
The impact of climate change in Zanzibar is a significant threat to socio-economic stability. Rising sea levels, changing rainfall patterns, and higher temperatures disrupt agriculture, threaten livelihoods, and increase vulnerabilities, particularly among marginalised groups. Women and young people are adversely affected, with limited access to resources and decision-making power exacerbating their challenges. While civil society organisations are essential in advocating for climate justice, many lack the capacity, resources, and coordination to drive effective change.
Project partners, Association of Non-Governmental Organization of Zanzibar (ANGOZA), will enhance the capacity of civil society organisations (CSOs) and foster public awareness to build a more climate-resilient society. ANGOZA will work with Zanzibar Climate Change Alliance and other civil society organisations engaged in climate justice advocacy, as well as marginalised communities, government agencies and local government authorities, to create robust networks and empower communities to advocate for climate justice through strategic interventions and collaboration.
This will be achieved by:
- Conducting public awareness campaigns via radio, television, and social media to enhance understanding of climate change and promote climate-resilient practices.
- Training CSOs and community members on climate change impacts and advocacy strategies.
- Organising network meetings for CSOs and communities from different regions of Zanzibar to share ideas and develop collective climate justice initiatives.
- Hosting coalition-building workshops to establish five regional platforms for climate justice.
- Facilitating dialogues with policy-makers to integrate climate justice into national and regional policies and practices.
As a result of the project, it is hoped that marginalised communities will participate in decision-making processes to advocate for sustainable practices and equitable policies that will safeguard vulnerable groups from the impacts of climate change. Regional platforms will amplify community voices in climate justice initiatives, and by influencing regional and national policies, the project will ensure climate justice and sustainability are prioritised in Zanzibar.
