Zine Making: Call for Submissions

The Rock Retreat Gibraltar is collaborating with Youlou Arts in St Vincent And The Grenadines for a women-led zine project. This is an opportunity to share your writing, illustrating and creative voice. Camille Saunders-Musser the director of Youlou (instagram @youlouartcentre) has proposed the theme of ‘HOME’ as this year’s exhibition title. The zines created by women will be simultaneously exhibited in Gibraltar and St Vincent to celebrate International Women’s Month March 2025.

Camille Saunders-Musser “Home is a broad subject and can mean many things. Artists and writers are free to explore themes of memory, identity and belonging.” She reminds us that HOME can be a physical place or an idea… a  place where you feel you belong.  “So, the subject is left wide open for you to interpret. As the saying goes – “Home is where the heart is”

Please remember that you never need to have made a zine before to enter your work in to this exhibition. We want genuine voices and art from everyone, just be yourself and create from the heart. We ask that you are 18 years or over to enter.

Why zines?

WHAT IS A ZINE AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

A zine (short for magazine) is a self-published, printed (sometimes digital) booklet. From the writing, to the illustration/photography, to the binding, they are DIY labours of love. They are often printed in limited quantities at a low cost, so that they may be sold cheaply or given away for free. A zine can be about anything—personal experiences, politics, poetry, fiction, art, music, food, pop culture, or the most recent sandwich you ate. Zines can be anything. Zines are for everyone.

There are so many reasons why zines are important. Here are just a few…

  • Historically, zines have been a way for marginalized creators to share their work and have their voices heard.
  • Zines allow people to share content that doesn’t fit neatly into the mainstream, whether it’s art, fiction, poetry, or essays.
  • Zine making is empowering! When you make a zine, you’re giving yourself permission to publish. It doesn’t matter if it’s perfect or if someone else thinks it’s good. Zine making is all about creating something and sharing it with others.
