Commemoration of World AIDS Day 1 December 2008, Malawi
National World AIDS Commemoration
Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) will lead the commemoration of World AIDS Day at the national level in Malawi at CIVO Stadium in Lilongwe. This event will start with a march to CIVO Stadium and a presentation of the petition to the Minister of Health outlining the various activities in the country. YONECO, a Network member will be one of the key actors in this important event.
District Level Events
YONECO is leading the commemoration of World AIDS events in Zomba City, its operational base. YONECO will lead various non-governmental and civil society organisations and government institutions through coordination and management of World AIDS Day activities in three locations in Zomba and the surrounding districts. The events will be will be marked by traditional dances, music, poems, speeches and other initatives raising awareness on HIV and AIDS. As a Network member, YONECO will also be a guest of honour at one of the events in Zomba district.
Special Message Broadcast on YONECO SMS System
From Friday, 28 December to Monday, 1 December YONECO will send out SMS messages addressing the importance of World AIDS Day and related issues. The YONECO team reach out to over 4000 subscribers .
Special Radio Programme
YONECO will run a Special Radio Programme on Saturday, 29 November and Monday, 1December on the Leadership Role of Youth and HIV and AIDS. The programme, supported by HIVOS, UNDEF and COMIC Relief, will feature on four radio stations: Capital FM 102, Star Radio, MIJ Radio and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Radio 1. These programmes highlight the leadership role of young people, youth living with HIV and AIDS and the importance of having visionary leadership in the run-up to the general elections and will be important components for the World AIDS Day Commemoration.
JANAIDS
Journalist Association against AIDS (JANAIDS) in Malawi has produced a special edition article on positive voices. YONECO has contributed to the article and will be responsible its distribution and dissemination.
