Job Title: Programme Officer, Commonwealth Writers
Tel: +44 (0)20 7747 6554

Rukhsana joined Commonwealth Writers in 2015. Her role is to support writers from across the Commonwealth. She works with international partners to strengthen creative sectors, enabling writers to be read more widely.

After studying Physics at University of Portsmouth and then Radiation and Environmental Protection at University of Surrey, Rukhsana took a part-time job selling advertising space for an online magazine. She was sacked after a week, but was offered a part-time editor position.

She has fifteen years of editorial experience, both online and in print. In 2007 she won a placement on a Diversity in Publishing Traineeship funded by Arts Council England. This was set up after publication of the ‘In Full Colour’ report published in the Bookseller, which highlighted the lack of diversity in publishing.

She has worked as an editor and commissioning editor at Profile and Saqi Books and has several years of publishing experience in fiction and nonfiction, with a special love of international writing.

In 2012 she was awarded the Kim Scott Walwyn Prize for Women in Publishing and in 2014 was named a Bookseller Rising Star.

She likes to travel, loves the written word in every form, and gets very excited about books, food, and the sea.
