Shree Baboo Chekitan Servansing is the Chair of the Commonwealth Foundation. He took office on 1 January having been appointed by Commonwealth Heads of Government. A Mauritian national, Ambassador Servansing has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a civil servant and in leadership roles with a number of international organisations, notably in the areas of international trade, development, public policy and diplomacy.

Formerly Mauritius’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, his time as a diplomat has seen him placed at the forefront of development initiatives. He helped steer the ACP-EU and Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) negotiations, was Chair of the Africa Group in Geneva in 2007, and was the personal representative of the Mauritian Prime Minister on the Steering Committee of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) – Africa’s flagship development framework.

Following his retirement from the Mauritian civil service, he headed the ACP-EU programme on Technical Barriers to Trade in Brussels from 2012 to 2014. In this role, he supported ACP countries in the development of new trade infrastructure and improved competitiveness.

Ambassador Servansing currently serves as a Judge on the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). In his new role with the Commonwealth Foundation, he will chair meetings of the organisation’s Board of Governors, and will be an important advocate for the organisation, promoting its vision and values.
