Commonwealth Group on Culture and Development
About the Commonwealth Group on Culture and Development
Culture is increasingly being realised as the missing pillar of development. Around the world, governments, donors and development organisations are beginning to acknowledge that if they ignore culture, they may be failing to engage with a crucial component of development. A number of organisations and international groupings have recently taken steps to better recognise and support the role culture and cultural practitioners can play in development. Now, the Commonwealth is building on this emerging body of work to encourage its member countries and citizens to make more of arguably one of its greatest resources: culture.
In early 2009, the Commonwealth Foundation convened the high level Group on Culture and Development. The Group is composed of a selection of experts and people working in culture and development at the grassroots level, selected from around the Commonwealth. During 2009, the Group is working towards a declaration on how governments and donors should better incorporate an awareness of culture into development processes.
The Group is actively sharing these recommendations and engaging with governments and civil society ahead of the Commonwealth Summit in Trinidad and Tobago in November 2009.
